There is nothing prettier than a rose in bloom. However, it takes a little work to get your roses to bloom with those magnificent smelling and eye-catching flowers.
Watering the Right Way
Contrary to popular belief, roses are not hard to care for. When it comes to watering, they do like to have a good soaking all the way to the roots. This is a good way to get them to root very deeply, so if they have to have an extended time without water, they can survive. Instead of drowning the roses, let them gradually soak up the water. Using a soaker hose or a drip hose that waters slowly over a period of time is your best bet.
Pruning Your Roses
You might be surprised to know that some varieties of roses will bloom continually if they are taken care of. By removing the old flowers and trimming them, you can have the great look they provide your lawn for many months.
The trimming when done properly is the way to make sure the roses bloom again and again. When you prune the roses, you are keeping them from forming seed hips which in turn tells the rose that it needs to generate more flowers. It also keeps your roses looking good instead of the haphazard growth that can occur if they are not pruned.
Since rose leaves are usually in sets, sometimes three, five, seven, or nine, you should prune just above the cluster of leaves. Do not cut them all off. Leave at least two sets on the vine that you are trimming. Choose a leaf that is pointing upward and make a cut at an angle.
Preventing Disease
Some diseases can really cripple a rose bush. Here are the ones you should be on the watch for:
1) Thrips - This is usually a disease that gets on the blooms of the rose. This is also more common in either yellow or white roses.
2) Blackspot - This is a fungus that is usually around during very wet or humid conditions. It can also be caused by over watering, especially the leaves.
3) Powdery Mildew and Rust - If you have plants that are crowded, in a shady spot that is very damp, or your weather entails hot days and cold nights, perfect conditions for powdery mildew has been set. Rust will show up when the leaves are moist, especially where there is heavy dew or areas that have a lot of fog.
Proper growing of roses does not require ideal conditions but if they develop any of the diseases from the above list, you need to think about replanting in an alternate spot and keep a fungicide handy.
A few things to remember when growing roses is they like sunshine, plenty of air distribution, and take the old leaves and flowers off to encourage growing. This also helps prevent disease.
Fertilizing is good but not too much. Let the roses get to where they need a little fertilizer and this will help them to winter better.
